Jesus: The New Way

By N T Wright

Session 1 – March 8, 2006

  1. Describe background & Bio
    1. Durham - The Anglican Diocese of Durham is one of 44 Dioceses in the Church of England. They have about 290 parishes, ranging from the inner-city and industrial areas, particularly on Tyneside and Wearside, to the remote rural dales in the West, reaching up into the high Pennines. The Venebale Bede lived and worshipped in this diocese in the 7th and 8th centuries and is buried in Durham Cathedral, as is Saint Cuthbert (who attended the Synod of Whitby), who as Bishop of Lindisfarne in the seventh century looked after this whole area.

  2. Read “Who is Tom Wright and What is He Saying” in Sounding the Alarm.

  3. Issues with Bishop Wright: “How then did Jesus think of himself?  He was aware, I suggest, of a vocation to do and be for Israel and the world what, according to
Scripture, only Israel's god can do and be.  He wasn't, in the normal
sense, 'aware of being God' in the way one knows one is male or female, or
    hungry or thirsty.” +NT Wright

So, what about Bishop Wright? Is his statement OK? It is always tempting to reduce the Incarnation to mentally manageable proportions.
    1. CS Lewis – in *Mere Christianity* stated: "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher.  He would either be a lunatic -- on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell."  (p. 56)

    2. How are we justified? ‘Imputed’ or ‘imparted’? Perhaps neither is fully correct. Wright tells us God’s righteousness means He must judge rightly. When we are judged by the righteous judge and judged or declared innocent we are justified. So, justification is really a legal term. Eschatologically Christ has done in the middle of history what had been expected at the end of history.

  4. Read Description of series – Remember – the focus of Bishop Wright is to place the man within his historical context and his frame of mind so that we can better understand what he was saying and why he was saying it.
